SB Live Midi Setup

Midi does not work out of the box in Fedora (I assume this is the case with a lot of distros given the fix below).

The Sound Blaster Live (value) doesn't have the midi sounds stored in ROM. This means that midi apps run but you get no sound.

  1. Insert your SB Live Driver CD.
  2. copy from the CDRROM - Audio/COMMON/SFBANK/8MBGMSFX.SF2 to your hard drive - I put it in /etc/midi/
  3. yum install awesfx*
  4. Before you start kMid, enter /bin/sfxload /etc/midi/8MBGMSFX.SF2 (as root). This loads the missing sound fonts. I inserted this as a line in /etc/rc.local so it always loads the sound fonts on startup.
